Pop music's "Thriller In Manila"
There is a war being waged in the pop world that may have went over the casual music listeners head. This war is between New York's very own Lady Gaga who has been regarded as the premier act in pop music and Katy Perry, the fierce ballad equipped pop princess from California. Now before you go all east vs west coast on the situation lets put this into perspective, the two have had a singles battle this past August with the releasing of Lady Gaga's "Applause" and Katy Perry's "Roar". If first week sales are any indication then Katy Perry is winning the battle up to this point, in the first week Katy Perry sold 557,000 singles of Roar and Gaga only sold 218,000 of Applause. Lady Gaga's Roar music video has been viewed over 44 million times on YouTube and Katy Perry has 4 million after being released last night. If recent fan animosity(via social media and YouTube comments) and every media outlet pitting them against each other wasn't a cry for war then MTV's Video Music Awards should give subtle indication as to the atmosphere between the two. Lady Gaga opened the VMA's with a demanding dance performance and Katy Perry ended the VMA's with a performance in a boxing ring near the Brooklyn Bridge. Both seemed as if they were trying to make a point... to each other. No matter who wins the battle for pop music supremacy this is one that will be interesting and could possibly shape the pop music landscape. Stay tuned.
